In a statement released on Thursday by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group accused IPOB of being responsible for the deaths of 175 security personnel and the destruction of police stations, INEC offices, and public infrastructure.
CNG criticized Obi for allegedly prioritizing ethnic interests over national security by supporting Kanu’s release. The group also cautioned northern voters against backing politicians aligned with IPOB, stating that such alliances ignore the suffering caused by the group’s violent activities.
The statement reads in part:
- “The demand for Kanu’s release by Igbo leaders is insensitive to those affected by IPOB’s violence.”
- “Kanu has incited violence, leading to the loss of hundreds of innocent lives, particularly in the North.”
- “Peter Obi aligning with Kanu shows a disregard for the pain and suffering of Nigerians.”
- “Obi’s stance is a betrayal of trust and a threat to national unity.”
- “IPOB’s agenda, backed by some Igbo elites, has dangerously affected Nigeria’s stability.”
CNG insisted that Kanu’s unconditional release would be unjust and detrimental to ongoing efforts to restore peace and order.
