The invasion of the Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan by self-proclaimed Yoruba Nation agitators on Saturday has been strongly condemned by the Oyo State Government, labeling it as an act of terrorism. According to a report by Naija News, individuals purporting to be Yoruba Nation supporters stormed the Oyo State Government Secretariat located at Agodi, Ibadan, and raised flags.

The situation required intervention from both the State Command police and army personnel from Division 2 to disperse the agitators and restore order to the area. The Nigerian Army reported that agitators even fired shots at soldiers who were deployed to maintain law and order.

Speaking to journalists in Ibadan on Monday, the state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, emphasized that those behind the invasion have put themselves in serious trouble. He stated, “Sponsors of the invasion of the Governor and State House of Assembly’s office have succeeded in landing themselves in serious trouble.” Oyelade characterized the attempt to forcibly enter the legislative chambers armed with seven pump-action submachine guns and over 700 live cartridges as an act of terrorism.

He commended the conduct of Prof Banji Akintoye, a prominent Yoruba nation agitator, for displaying the wisdom and civility emblematic of the Yoruba race. Oyelade reiterated that despite the incident, Oyo State remains one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria.

The government’s stance underscores its commitment to maintaining peace and order in the state despite challenges posed by such incidents.
