Committee Launched By Makinde To Assess Supreme Court Verdict On Financial Autonomy For Local Governments

On Monday, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State established a special technical and legal committee to assess the recent Supreme Court ruling concerning local government financial autonomy. Governor Makinde criticized the Supreme Court’s decision and the federal government’s attempts to exert undue influence over state and local government operations, arguing that this approach is creating tensions in the nation rather than addressing pressing economic issues.

During the briefing, Hon. Ademola Ojo reaffirmed the governor’s commitment to the well-being of the people and the protection of all stakeholders’ interests.

Barrister Aikomo outlined the committee’s terms of reference, which include reviewing the Supreme Court’s judgement, identifying challenges, and making recommendations for an implementation plan that benefits all stakeholders. The committee has been given a timeline of 4 to 6 weeks to complete its work.

The meeting included representatives from various relevant groups and stakeholders in the state, including leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), and members from the state House of Assembly.
