This acknowledgment was detailed in a statement from Munachi Okoro, Head of Communications and Knowledge Management at PPDC, shared with Arewa PUNCH in Keffi Local Government Area on Thursday. The commendation came in the form of an award presented at a seminar organized by the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Law Clinic on October 4, 2024. The seminar, titled “Assessing the Potency of Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Nigerian Criminal Justice System,” highlighted PPDC’s advocacy for legal reforms in the state and beyond.
Okoro emphasized that this recognition reinforces PPDC’s status as a leader in promoting access to justice in Nigeria.
The seminar also praised PPDC’s collaboration with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, particularly in the Reforms Pre-trial Detention in Nigeria, Phase II project, which empowers law clinics and supports indigent inmates in various custodial centers.
During the award presentation, Rilwan Suleiman, Coordinator of the NSUK Law Clinic, stated, “We present this award of recognition to PPDC for its immense contributions to advancing access to justice and promoting clinical legal education in Nasarawa State and Nigeria.”
Joshua Uba, the Nasarawa State Program Manager of PPDC, expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to driving meaningful legal reforms and improving access to justice in the state.
Okoro noted that the success of this event marks a significant step in PPDC’s broader mission to reform pretrial detention systems and advocate for justice reforms in Nigeria, ensuring that pretrial detainees are not overlooked and that viable alternatives to detention are actively discussed.
She characterized PPDC as an NGO and social enterprise dedicated to promoting transparent governance and increasing citizen engagement in governance processes.
