Delivering the judgment on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho found Kanu guilty of engaging in terrorism, leading a proscribed organization, issuing threats capable of destabilizing the country, and inciting attacks against security operatives. Consequently, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Justice Omotosho noted that the prosecution had successfully proven all charges beyond a reasonable doubt, citing Kanu’s broadcasts, directives, and recorded statements as clear evidence of intent to commit acts covered under Nigeria’s terrorism laws, including threats to national security and incitement of violence in the South-East.

The seven charges against Nnamdi Kanu, according to certified court documents, are as follows:

Count 1: Between 2014 and 2015, Kanu broadcast on Radio Biafra from London, urging states in the South-East, South-South, and parts of Kogi and Benue to secede from Nigeria to form the Republic of Biafra, violating Section 41(c) of the Criminal Code Act.

Count 2: On 28 April 2015, Kanu broadcast false and defamatory statements about President Muhammadu Buhari on Radio Biafra, calling him a paedophile, terrorist, and “embodiment of evil,” contrary to Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act.

Count 3: Between March and April 2015, Kanu imported and stored a TRAM 50L radio transmitter in Anambra State, concealed as household items, in violation of Section 47(2) of the Criminal Code Act.

Count 4: Between 2018 and 2021, Kanu openly professed membership in IPOB, a proscribed organization, through Radio Biafra broadcasts, violating Section 16 of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Count 5: On 22 April 2021, Kanu incited IPOB members to target security personnel and their families via Radio Biafra, committing an offense under Section 1(2)(h) of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act.
