Concerns Over Boko Haram Lead Chad To Weigh Withdrawal From MNJTFChadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has signaled the possibility of withdrawing Chadian forces from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) following a recent Boko Haram attack that resulted in casualties among Chadian soldiers.

After the assault on October 27 against a Chadian army position in Barkaram, President Deby took command of military operations along the Lake Chad border. In a statement, Hassan Abdelkerim Bouyëbri, Chad’s Director General of Communication, highlighted the President’s concerns over the coalition’s diminishing unity, noting, “The MNJTF’s lack of coordinated action against Boko Haram reflects the coalition’s waning commitment to this shared struggle.”

Since visiting the frontline on October 28, President Deby has overseen the burial of fallen soldiers, ensured medical care for the wounded, and established a local command post to direct counter-insurgency efforts. He also launched Operation Haskanite, aimed at eliminating remaining Boko Haram fighters, reinforced Chad’s border defenses, and outlined strategies to counter the militants’ asymmetric warfare tactics.

While reaffirming his commitment to protecting Chadian citizens and addressing security threats, President Deby indicated that Chad may reconsider its participation in the MNJTF if collaborative efforts within the task force do not improve. Established in 1994, the MNJTF includes troops from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, originally formed to tackle cross-border crime and expanded in 2012 to combat terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin.
