In a statement issued by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi asserted that his remarks had been distorted. The statement read, “We have noticed a significant misrepresentation of his recent media interview, with claims that he called for the dismantling of churches in Nigeria. This headline has greatly altered the meaning of Obi’s message and distorted it for malicious purposes.”
The former governor emphasized that he is a man of strong faith who respects all religions and intended to highlight how religion can be more effectively integrated into people’s lives.
Obi explained that he was referencing the biblical principle that “faith without works is unhelpful.” His suggestion to turn night vigils into production nights aimed to stress the importance of worshipping God through productive work.
He noted that Jesus chose his disciples not while they were praying, but while they were working as fishermen and tax collectors. Obi argued that Nigeria should not prioritize prayer over work, as both should complement each other.
“There is no scriptural evidence that Jesus blessed someone for idleness,” he stated, pointing out that some worship communities in Nigeria overlook the biblical call to be “doers of the word.
