Controversy Arises as Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike Is Nominated As A Minister By President Tinubu

Wike, who remains a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has neither resigned nor been suspended by the party’s national leadership, played a prominent role in securing Tinubu’s victory in Rivers State. Two factions within the APC in Rivers State have different views on Wike’s nomination. Led by Chief Tony Okocha, the national chairman of the Protocols/Logistics Committee of the defunct Tinubu-Shettima Grassroots Independent Campaign Council (TSHICC), one faction is pleased with the nomination and had campaigned for Wike to be selected. On the other hand, the party’s state chairman, Chief Emeka Beke, leads another faction that seems less enthusiastic about the nomination.
The party’s leadership in the state has announced that it will respond to the development after consulting with leaders and relevant stakeholders. The APC’s publicity secretary in the state, Darlington Nwauju, stated that a proper response will be given after the necessary consultations.
Chief Tony Okocha’s faction praised Wike for his contributions to Tinubu’s victory in Rivers State during the February 25, 2023 presidential election. They believe that Wike’s role in securing funds for the party’s campaigns and other ground works entitles him to the ministerial position.
The controversy surrounding Wike’s nomination continues to unfold as both factions within the APC in Rivers State express their differing opinions on the matter.
