Sources indicate that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is personally convinced that the labor’s demand is not unrealistic, citing his campaign promises as evidence of his readiness to tackle the challenge.
During the June NEC meeting, the Salaries & Wages Commission assessed the financial implications of the proposed wage increase and indicated that the federal government could afford it.
However, the state governors, led by Anambra State governor Charles Soludo, raised questions about the source of funds and allocation among states before adopting the presentation.
A sub-committee was subsequently formed, consisting of governors from various states, to review the situation. This committee established a Technical Working Group (TWG), headed by Governor Charles Soludo, to further examine the issues surrounding the wage increase.
The TWG, after meeting three times in the previous month, resolved that negotiations with labor should be conducted separately between the federal government and state governments.
The final decision on the national minimum wage will be determined later this month during the NEC meeting, with a report from the sub-committee submitted to the president as an advisory. It is likely that, at the very least, federal government workers will receive a substantial minimum wage increase, while the fate of state workers will be determined by the Soludo-led TWG.
