Controversy Erupts As Cancer Patient Declines Life-Saving Blood Transfusion
Mensah Omolola, popularly known online as AuntieEsther, has ignited nationwide debate after refusing a recommended blood transfusion as part of her cancer treatment, citing her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Her decision has raised concerns, particularly because over ₦30 million was raised through public donations to support her medical care, coordinated by charity advocate Wisdom Obi-Dickson, known on as @Wizarab10.
As of December 1, 2025, Obi-Dickson confirmed that more than ₦30.7 million had been contributed toward AuntieEsther’s treatment. In her latest update, she revealed that medical tests indicated her cancer was localized to her breast and armpit areas.
“I know many people are awaiting updates. My results are out, and I thank everyone for their financial support. The doctor informed me and my husband that the results are good,” she shared with her followers.
She added, “The doctor wants to start chemotherapy, but I will begin with injections first. I respect everyone’s opinions, but my family and I have chosen injections and nutrient-rich food to boost my blood. The doctor supports this decision, and chemo will start once my blood count improves.”
AuntieEsther also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support. “Thank you to everyone. I am improving. God bless you all,” she said.
The situation became more complicated when Obi-Dickson revealed that AuntieEsther’s church had warned her that accepting a blood transfusion could lead to disciplinary action, including possible disfellowship.
He explained that doctors had presented two treatment options: one involving a blood transfusion, which was within budget, and a more expensive alternative that avoided transfusion. AuntieEsther opted for the latter to adhere to her religious beliefs.
“She was offered a blood transfusion before beginning chemotherapy but declined due to her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness. She chose an alternative treatment,” Obi-Dickson stated.
While acknowledging that her choice would prolong treatment and increase costs, he emphasized the importance of respecting her religious convictions.
Public Reaction: Calls for Refund and Safety Concerns
Despite the support and funds raised, AuntieEsther’s decision has angered some Nigerians, who argue that the donations were meant to save her life, not fund a treatment that could endanger it.
Toma To Shun, tweeting as #Tmama_toma, said, “She should leave the hospital and rely fully on the church for deliverance. Let the money go to others who need treatment, or return the funds to the donors.”
Hud Adeyinka Katayeyanjue added, “Faith shouldn’t end the life God is sustaining. Choosing treatment isn’t a lack of faith; it’s stewardship. There’s no worship in the grave. Sometimes the most spiritual act is to live to praise God.”
Reality TV star Natacha Akide (Simply Tacha) expressed disbelief, tweeting, “If someone wants to die, let them. I don’t understand why people are trying to save someone who refuses to be saved. This is no longer religion; it’s madness.”
Other voices called for understanding, emphasizing her religious rights. @Preciouspaa noted, “Jehovah’s Witnesses have refused blood transfusions for decades. While it’s tragic, it’s their belief. We should pray for her faith to guide healing.”
@Valentineabako added, “Respecting her faith while praying for recovery is the most compassionate approach. No easy answers here, just hope and empathy.”
However, some were critical. @Opehyehmmi said, “I’ll judge and criticize her if she doesn’t value her life despite people donating to save it.”
@PeacefulNaturre, a nurse, commented, “Prayer alone isn’t enough. She needs a blood transfusion.”
@Victor_Gameboy stated, “God gives man wisdom to treat illnesses. He doesn’t send an angel to fix everything.”
Obi-Dickson has maintained transparency regarding the funds. In his latest update, he shared a receipt of ₦74,000 spent on AuntieEsther’s requested food.
“AuntieEsther wanted soup, as swallow is her preference. That’s the bill, ₦74k including delivery. Balance as of December 1, 2025: ₦30,776,252. Thank you for your generosity,” he confirmed.
