Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Epelle described political appointments as a complex game of chess and expressed concern that the government often disregards public perception. He suggested that President Bola Tinubu may not have received adequate guidance regarding Mahmoud’s appointment, which, he argued, shows indifference to citizens’ concerns.

Epelle cautioned that Mahmoud’s political background could negatively affect Nigeria’s diplomatic relations, noting that some Western nations view him as unfriendly to democratic processes. He stressed that sending an envoy with “political baggage” may limit Nigeria’s access to sensitive information and meetings in host countries.

He expressed surprise at the nomination, stating he had expected Mahmoud to retire to academia or private life.

“Political appointments are a chess game. They often ignore federal character and public perception. These decisions are usually made by a small cabal close to the President,” Epelle said.

“I thought Mahmoud would be relaxing or returning to university teaching. I had no idea he was still interested in political office. While the President has the right to appoint anyone, he must feel the pulse of the nation and understand the nuances of diplomacy. Sending someone with political baggage can lead host countries to limit their access to key meetings and information.”

He continued, “If Mahmoud ends up in the U.S., it could be a disaster. Western nations already view him as unfriendly to democracy. While some African countries might tolerate it, he is not the ideal nominee for Nigeria’s global interests.”
