According to Vanguard, Engonga, who formerly led the national financial investigation agency, was found guilty of diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars in travel funds for personal use. Five other high-ranking officials were also implicated in the scheme.
The case took a sensational turn last year when multiple sex tapes featuring Engonga with the wives of other officials surfaced online, with some reportedly filmed in his office at the finance ministry.
The videos went viral on social media, inspiring parodies, memes, songs, and even a mock product named “Balthazariem,” a spoof virility drug referencing him.
Despite the widespread online attention, the Bioko provincial tribunal handed down both a prison sentence and a $220,000 fine to Engonga.
