The decision, attributed to the escalating costs of transportation and other operational expenses, mirrors the broader economic challenges confronting businesses in the region.

Mr. Wahab Olayiwola, the Chairman of the association in the state, conveyed this announcement during a prayer session at the Agodi Gate prayer ground in Ibadan. Olayiwola expressed that the butchery business is not immune to the harsh realities of inflation and the rising costs of sustaining operations. He stated, “We urge the residents of the state to bear with us on this development; we were cornered before announcing this increase,” underscoring the challenging situation faced by the butchers.

Given these challenges, the association’s leadership is appealing to the government for intervention to avert the potential collapse of their trade. Olayiwola called for the provision of soft loans and the creation of a more conducive environment for selling meat at more affordable prices.

Echoing Olayiwola’s sentiments, Mr. Biliaminu Elesinmeta, the Southwest Coordinator of the butchers, emphasized the importance of divine intervention during these difficult times. “We believe in the power of prayer, but we also need the government’s assistance to mitigate the impact of the current economic situation,” Elesinmeta explained. He further highlighted the intricacies of the meat supply chain, noting the dependence on cow imports from neighboring countries and the financial burdens imposed by foreign exchange rates and transportation costs.

Members of the butchers’ association, sharing their struggles during the prayer session, implored the government to take tangible steps to alleviate the economic pressures on their business, which has been grappling with operating at a loss.
