The Nigerian Military High Command has thrown its weight behind the commitment made by Yoruba activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, to collaborate with security forces in eliminating killer herdsmen from the South-West forests. The endorsement was conveyed by the spokesperson of the Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, who stressed the imperative of collective efforts to confront the nation’s security challenges.

While acknowledging the importance of community involvement, Maj.-Gen. Buba cautioned against any call to disregard the armed forces, emphasizing that such sentiments would be contrary to Nigeria’s constitution. He stated, “If what he said is to make the situation better, he is welcomed, but if what he is saying is that we should disregard the armed forces of Nigeria, definitely, he is out of line because that is against Nigeria’s constitution.”

Providing a substantial operational update, Maj.-Gen. Buba disclosed that in February 2024, the armed forces achieved significant results, neutralizing 974 terrorists, apprehending 621, and successfully rescuing 466 kidnapped hostages. The military’s resolute commitment to eradicating terrorism and insecurity across the country was underscored through decisive actions and strategic operations.

Maj.-Gen. Buba emphasized the focus on creating a safer environment for citizens by eliminating all threats to their safety and security. Synchronized strikes between ground and air forces targeted terrorist enclaves, resulting in a considerable number of casualties. The spokesperson asserted, “It is possible to say with significant certainty that these strikes have had a significant impact on the terrorists adversely.”

Highlighting achievements in various geo-political zones, Maj.-Gen. Buba showcased the armed forces’ dedication to national security interests. The proactive and coordinated efforts throughout February underscored the military’s determination to safeguard citizens and ensure the nation’s security.
