Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony charges after a jury found he had falsified business records to cover up an alleged affair with a porn star before the 2016 election. His sentencing is currently scheduled for November 26, but his legal team is pushing to have the charges dismissed in light of a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding presidential immunity.

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court, with its conservative 6-3 majority, ruled that presidents are granted broad immunity from prosecution for certain official acts carried out during their time in office. Trump’s attorneys argue that this immunity should apply to his case, which they contend is politically motivated and undermines presidential authority.

“The joint application for a stay of the current deadlines until November 19 is granted,” the court said in an email to the involved parties, as reported by AFP.

If Judge Juan Merchan rules in Trump’s favor and dismisses the case, he would avoid sentencing altogether. However, if the judge declines to dismiss the charges, Trump’s legal team is expected to file motions to delay or contest sentencing, citing potential disruptions to Trump’s duties as president once he assumes office on January 20.
