The Lagos State Government has revealed that within the past year, 70 husbands have been subjected to physical abuse by their wives. Conversely, during the same period, 592 women reported instances of spousal violence perpetrated by their husbands.
The disclosure came in a report presented by Cecilia Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), during a ministerial press briefing commemorating the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
According to Dada, a total of 662 cases of domestic violence were reported to the ministry over the past year. Of these cases, 274 were directly reported to the ministry, while 388 were reported through its toll-free line.
In addition to these figures, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), disclosed last November that between September 2022 and July 2023, 340 men reported experiencing domestic violence at the hands of their wives.
In a separate development, the Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to teachers and schools found conducting extra lessons beyond official hours. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, emphasized that the extra hour after school should be dedicated to extracurricular activities, not paid lessons.
Alli-Balogun stressed the importance of students participating in various social clubs and activities to ensure their holistic development. He condemned the practice of teachers using this time for paid lessons, reiterating that education in Lagos State is free, and no fees should be charged for additional services.
In light of these announcements, the government is poised to take decisive action against any teacher caught engaging in such practices, emphasizing the need for educators to fulfill their duties within the designated timeframe.
