One of the key cases before the panel centers around a controversial decision by Justice Lifu, which prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voters’ register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission for use in local government elections. Despite this ruling, the election was conducted as scheduled.

In another case, Justice Lifu had issued an ex parte order restraining the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from dissolving the Rivers State PDP executive committee, which is reportedly aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

A mild drama unfolded in the courtroom when two senior lawyers separately claimed to represent the PDP in a case aimed at removing 27 Rivers State House of Assembly members who are seen as supporters of Wike. J.Y. Musa represented the Umar Damagum-led PDP executive, while B.F. Folurunsho claimed to have been authorized by the PDP’s National Legal Adviser, asserting that the adviser holds the ultimate authority over party legal matters.
