In his remarks, Aligbe, who spoke on behalf of the 39 Regular Course, reflected on Lagbaja’s exemplary career and leadership, highlighting that Lagbaja was the only officer in the Nigerian Army to command a battalion on two separate occasions. Both officers were part of the 39 Regular Course, which commissioned 199 cadets into the armed forces on September 12, 1987.
The ceremony, attended by senior military officials, family, and close friends, celebrated Lagbaja’s remarkable contributions to the military. Aligbe shared personal memories, recalling that even as a cadet, Lagbaja stood out for his exceptional leadership qualities. He emphasized, “From the very beginning, he led with confidence and competence. His leadership skills were evident as early as our time in the 39 Regular Course. He commanded with authority, and his career proved it.”
Aligbe went on to commend Lagbaja’s unique achievement of commanding both battalions and brigades at different points in his career. “While such positions are often hard to come by, Lagbaja had the privilege of commanding a battalion at two separate times and leading brigades as a general,” he said.
Aligbe further honored Lagbaja’s unwavering commitment to service, underscoring that the best way to honor his memory was by continuing the values he held dear—dedication, service, and the belief in Nigeria’s unity. “Lagbaja gave everything for the country, and we must carry on his legacy,” he added.
Bilikisu Ibrahim, speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, shared a poignant reflection of Lagbaja as both a military leader and a deeply spiritual individual. “Beyond his role as a soldier, he was a man of faith, whose strength and conviction carried him through the trials of his service,” Ibrahim said. “His faith guided him through the darkest moments, and it was through his spirituality that he found the fortitude to lead with courage and compassion.”
In a moving tribute, Tade Adekunle, the Global President of the St Charles Old Boys Association, recited a poem written by a senior secondary school student, describing Lagbaja as an “immortal hero.” The poem honored his sacrifice and his enduring legacy, stating, “The immortal hero, a militant heart, now still and cold… On the altar of freedom, you laid your life, your sacrifice, our beacon of hope.”
The emotional ceremony underscored the lasting impact of General Lagbaja’s life and leadership, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, integrity, and unwavering service to the nation.
