Court Raises Alarm Over Delay Tactics In Agunloye’s Case, Threatens Legal ActionA judge at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Jude Onwuegbuzie, has issued a stern warning to the defense counsel of former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, to cease using delay tactics in the ongoing trial.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the judge expressed his frustration with Agunloye’s defense lawyer, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Jude Onwuegbuzie, for continuously citing the defendant’s health and age, as well as filing motions that have hindered the trial’s progress.
“My principle of justice is that there should be no delays,” Judge Onwuegbuzie stated during Thursday’s proceedings. “Previously, you raised the issue of amicus curiae, wasting the court’s time. There must be mutual respect in this court. Do not serve processes here if they are not properly prepared,” the judge admonished.
Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Abba Mohammed, had requested an adjournment to allow time to review the counter affidavits filed by the defense in opposition to the application to amend the charges. The judge responded firmly, saying, “In my court, I do not read processes. If you need time to serve documents, they must reach me on time, and the opposing counsel must be informed promptly.”
The judge then adjourned the case until November 28 for a ruling on the application’s adoption.
The EFCC is prosecuting Agunloye in connection with a $6 billion contract for the Mambilla hydropower project. The anti-graft agency claims it traced suspicious payments from Sunrise Power and Transmission Ltd. to Agunloye’s bank accounts. Additionally, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has demanded that Agunloye explain the source of his authority to award the $6 billion contract to Sunrise in 2003.
