Court Sentences Four To Death For Murdering Woman Over Witchcraft AllegationsA Jigawa State High Court, presided over by Hon. Justice Ado Yusuf Birnin-Kudu, has sentenced four individuals to death by hanging for their roles in the murder of Salamatu Musa, a 30-year-old woman accused of witchcraft. The convicts—Hassan Isah (55), Adama Yahaya (42), Abdullahi Yahaya (35), and Maryam Daso Yahaya (28)—all residents of Kwan-Dole Village in the Mallam-Madori Local Government Area, were found guilty of conspiring to kill Salamatu Musa, whom they blamed for the death of their child through alleged witchcraft.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Justice Birnin-Kudu delivered the verdict on December 4, 2024, stating that the accused acted with full knowledge of the probable consequences of their actions, which led to the death of the victim. “The court finds the accused guilty of committing the offence with full knowledge of its probable consequence: death,” the judge said. As a result, each of the convicts was sentenced to six years in prison for criminal conspiracy, alongside a death sentence by hanging for the charge of culpable homicide.
The case dates back to 2019, when the prosecution presented five witnesses, a medical report, and confessional statements from the accused, which ultimately convinced the court of their guilt. The court found them in violation of Sections 97 and 221(b) of the Penal Code.
Abbas Rufa’i Wangara, the Director of Protocol and Publicity for the Jigawa State Judiciary, emphasized that the judgment reflected the Judiciary’s commitment to justice. “This judgment underscores the Judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all, irrespective of social or cultural beliefs,” Wangara remarked.
The convicts have 90 days to file an appeal. The verdict has sparked mixed reactions in the state, with some residents praising the court for its strong stance on justice, while others raised concerns about the cultural and legal implications of the case.
