Court Sentences Uyo Resident For Dancing On Sprayed Naira Notes

One of the charges stated: “On June 27, 2024, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Etiusen Stephen Udo sold Forty Thousand Naira notes (N40,000.00) to Edidiong Usoro, contravening Section 21 (4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, punishable under Section 21 (1).”

Stephen pleaded guilty to both charges. Following his plea, prosecution counsel Joshua Abolarin requested the court to convict and sentence him, as well as permanently forfeit the recovered cash to the Federal Government of Nigeria. However, defense counsel Udeme Tom urged a lenient sentence, emphasizing Stephen’s remorse and first-time offender status.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Justice Oyetenu convicted Etiusen Stephen and ordered the forfeiture of the Forty Thousand Naira recovered from him to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The arrest occurred on June 27, 2024, at Shelter Afrique in Akwa Ibom State, where Stephen and ten others were apprehended while partying at Ken’s Court Luxury Apartments. Stephen was observed spraying Naira notes and carelessly stepping on them while dancing.
