The incident unfolded at Terminal 2 after police responded to reports of a disturbance, with officers seen instructing bystanders to keep their distance. The detained individual, reportedly a young man, was lying down with his hands restrained behind him when a police officer violently kicked his face and proceeded to stamp on his head. Concurrently, the man was subjected to at least one Taser discharge.

During the altercation, a woman, believed to be a family member, witnessed the incident in shock and attempted to intervene by pulling the man’s head away from the officers after he was stamped on.

Greater Manchester Police explained that the footage followed an incident where multiple officers were assaulted, resulting in one officer sustaining a broken nose. They further detailed that due to the officers being armed, there was a significant risk of their firearms being seized during the assault.

According to a police statement: “Officers were called to reports of an altercation at Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport. While attempting to arrest one of the suspects involved, three officers were violently assaulted, knocked to the ground, and one female officer suffered a broken nose. As firearms officers were present, there was a clear risk during this assault of their firearms being taken from them.”

Four individuals were arrested at the scene for charges including affray and assault on emergency service workers. Greater Manchester Police acknowledged public concerns over the incident and stated that their Professional Standards Directorate is reviewing the matter.

The footage has sparked widespread criticism online, with former Chief Prosecutor for the northwest Nazir Afzal commenting: “I obviously don’t have the whole picture but I see no justification for the kick in the head, followed by a stamp and a taser on a prone, unarmed man with his hands by his side.”
