In the verdict delivered on Wednesday, the court also invalidated the House proceedings and resolutions that led to Obasa’s ouster on January 13, 2025. Obasa, who has now been reinstated as Speaker, had dragged the Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, the then newly-installed Speaker, to court over the matter.

According to reports, the ruling was handed down by Justice Yetunde Pinheiro of the Lagos State High Court.

The case, filed on February 12, 2025, through his legal counsel Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), contended that the Speaker’s removal took place while the House was on recess and he was outside the country.

Reacting in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, Obasa described the judgment as a step toward unity and stronger legislative progress.

“This is a victory not just for me but for the Lagos State House of Assembly as a democratic institution and for both current and future lawmakers,” Obasa said.

“The court’s ruling reinforces our collective resolve to move forward with a united front. We remain dedicated to working together harmoniously for the greater good of our constituents, Lagos State, and Nigeria.”
