In a statement released to the press in Ibadan by the National Organizing Committee Chairman, Dr. Oludayo Tade, following its inaugural International Conference themed “Security, Democratic Governance, and Development in Nigeria,” the society emphasized that both security and good governance are essential for achieving sustainable development in Nigeria.
The communiqué underlined the significance of addressing corruption issues comprehensively, from the highest levels to the grassroots, to promote sustainable development.
It stressed the importance of criminologists in Nigeria actively contributing to policy discussions and providing evidence-based recommendations for effectively addressing security challenges.
During the conference, the convener and renowned criminologist, Professor Etannibi Alemika, who also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NSC, expressed satisfaction that the idea of establishing the Nigeria Society for Criminology had finally come to fruition. He praised the contributions of numerous prominent criminologists.
Alemika urged criminologists to ensure that they communicate their research findings to relevant government agencies and organizations to ensure the adoption of evidence-based policies that can make a meaningful impact.
