Dangerous Bend’ – Turaki Camp Reacts As Supreme Court Delivers PDP Verdict
The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Taminu Turaki has criticised the Supreme Court ruling that nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group described the judgment as a “dangerous bend” for the party.
The Supreme Court, in a split 3–2 decision delivered on Thursday, dismissed the appeal filed by the Turaki-led faction, ruling that it lacked merit.
The faction argued that the judgment has left the PDP without a clearly defined leadership structure, raising concerns about the party’s direction.
Ememobong expressed confidence, however, that the party’s existing structures would take necessary steps to stabilise the situation and establish leadership going forward.
In its detailed response, the faction noted that the five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, upheld earlier rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court, which invalidated the Ibadan convention.
According to the statement, the majority judgment—delivered by Justices Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, Stephen Adah, and Mohammed Garba—was based on the position that the appellants acted in defiance of an existing Federal High Court order, and therefore could not be granted relief.
However, the dissenting justices, Haruna Tsammani and Abubakar Umar, held that the matter concerned the internal affairs of the party and should not have been entertained by the courts.
They also argued that the majority ruling introduced issues not raised by the parties without allowing them the opportunity to respond, which they said runs contrary to established judicial principles.
The faction further noted that the judgment, alongside the earlier suspension of key party figures including Ajibade (SAN) and Samuel Anyanwu, has effectively created a leadership vacuum within the PDP.
Despite this, it maintained that party organs would act swiftly to reposition and stabilise the party.
The statement warned that the situation represents a critical turning point, cautioning that if not carefully managed, it could have wider implications not only for the PDP but also for Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system.
