Dangote Explains Why Ordinary Nigerians Should Invest In Dangote Refinery IPO
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has explained why his company is offering shares in the Dangote Refinery to the public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), despite his enormous personal wealth.
Dangote addressed the issue during a recent interview with Al Jazeera after the interviewer questioned why he needed to raise funds through an IPO when he could potentially use his personal wealth to finance the project.
The interviewer noted that Dangote is the richest Black man in the world and asked why he could not simply commit some of his personal resources to the refinery instead of seeking investment from the public.
Responding, Dangote explained that the primary objective of the IPO was not to raise money to fund the refinery, but to provide ordinary people with an opportunity to own a stake in the business.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Dangote said the share offering was designed to allow people who might not ordinarily have access to major investments to participate in the company’s growth.
“Okay, so let me tell you. The IPO we’re doing is not that we want to raise money. It is purely we want the poor people, people like my driver, my cook, your driver, your cook, yourself, your wife, and your kids, to have a piece of the action,” Dangote said.
He emphasised that the initiative was intended to broaden ownership of the refinery and give members of the public an opportunity to benefit from its performance as shareholders.
Dangote’s comments have generated discussions online, particularly over the prospect of ordinary Nigerians becoming shareholders in one of the country’s largest industrial projects.
The remarks come amid the public offering of shares in Dangote Refinery, as the company seeks to expand participation in ownership of the business beyond its existing investors.
