The investment, exceeding $280 million, positions Dangote as a leader in the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) sector and reflects its dedication to combating climate change while facilitating a transition to a low-carbon economy. This initiative is designed to aid the government’s shift from petroleum products to CNG.
Arvind Pathak, Group Managing Director of Dangote Cement Plc, highlighted that the investment will focus on acquiring a fleet of 100% CNG trucks, with plans to convert the entire fleet by mid-2026. He stated, “To support this transition, we are expanding our CNG fuelling infrastructure to ensure reliable access for our growing fleet.”
Pathak also pointed to the CNG station in Obajana, capable of refuelling over 3,000 trucks, as evidence of their commitment, with plans for a second station in Ibese to further enhance fleet operations.
Dangote expressed optimism regarding President Tinubu’s leadership in the nation’s push for energy efficiency, noting the importance of private sector involvement in this initiative. He remarked, “Our proactive adoption of CNG has established us as the leading operator of CNG trucks in Nigeria.”
He emphasized that this initiative supports Tinubu’s goals for energy independence and contributes significantly to a more secure energy future. “With the new policy launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to a cleaner and greener future,” Dangote stated.
President Tinubu reiterated the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources in the transportation sector, calling the adoption of CNG transportation crucial for the country’s economic growth. “Utilizing natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next step forward,” he affirmed.
