Dangote Reacts To Dirty Fuel Scandal

The management of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed reports alleging that it imported high-sulphur petrol from the United Kingdom into Nigeria, describing the claims as false, malicious, and misleading.

In a statement made available to the press, the company clarified that contrary to recent media reports suggesting that it brought in “dirty fuel” with 690 parts per million (ppm) of sulphur — far exceeding Nigeria’s 50 ppm legal limit under the Clean Fuels Policy — the said cargo was not finished petrol but an intermediate product meant for further processing.

According to the refinery, the imported material will undergo additional refining to meet both Nigerian and international quality standards before being released for use.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, quality assurance, and the production of cleaner fuels, emphasizing that it remains dedicated to supporting Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency and environmental protection goals.
