Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has dismissed reports that gunmen attacked the convoy of his cousin, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Reports had earlier emerged that suspected thugs attacked the governor’s convoy shortly after he visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.

According to The PUNCH, the incident triggered an exchange of gunfire that lasted between 12 and 15 minutes.

The governor had visited the monarch after leaving the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo, where he received his Certificate of Return following his re-election.

An eyewitness reportedly said Adeleke and his entourage were welcomed by the monarch, who had also presented the governor’s Certificate of Return to the traditional ruler.

According to the account, tension arose as the meeting was coming to an end, shortly after the monarch offered prayers.

The eyewitness claimed that Adeleke had already exited the hall through a passage designated for the monarch and his wives when gunshots were heard.

However, Davido rejected the reports that the governor’s convoy had come under attack.

In a post on his verified X account on Wednesday evening, the singer explained that the incident was a fight that occurred outside the monarch’s palace and was not directed at the governor or his entourage.

Davido wrote:

“Lies! It was a fight outside the palace that had nothing to do with us. The people love his excellency.”
