The attack occurred during a peace mission to a troubled area of the state, where the soldiers and vigilantes were ambushed and killed by armed gunmen. The incident was confirmed by Abdullahi Aliyu Tashas, the chairman of the Toto local government area, who revealed that the soldiers were deployed to maintain peace following previous attacks on communities by the same militia group.
Tashas explained that the soldiers were on patrol in response to the earlier Bassa militia attacks when they fell victim to an ambush by the same group. The Bassa militia had previously attacked four communities in Katakpa village on February 1, 2024, resulting in three casualties and significant property damage, including eight houses, six vehicles, and seven motorcycles.
The chairman added that the corpses of the soldiers were recovered and handed over to military representatives who visited the area in response to the attack. The ambulance carrying the soldiers’ bodies was confirmed to be en route to its destination.
This tragic incident occurred just a week after armed men killed three individuals and caused extensive property damage in a similar attack on the same community. Additionally, about three weeks prior, the suspected militia group targeted the neighboring Okudud community, resulting in seven fatalities, numerous injuries, and the destruction of several houses in the January assault.
