Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has instructed the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to pursue those advocating for a military takeover of power in the nation.
This directive was conveyed in a statement released on Thursday, March 7, by the Director of Information, Press, and Public Relations of the Defence Ministry, Henshaw Ogubikean.
Matawalle characterized those urging an undemocratic change of government as purveyors of darkness, cautioning that individuals caught in such activities would face severe consequences.
He remarked, “The call for a violent change of government by the military is absurd, preposterous, and naive. The military has embraced the reality of a democratic government in Nigeria and is committed to its constitutional duty of defending the constitution. Those advocating for the disruption of the constitutional government should cease such actions and acknowledge the democratic reality prevailing.”
Matawalle emphasized that the recent criminal activities, such as the attack on a warehouse and a haulage vehicle transporting food items to other regions, should not serve as a justification for unpatriotic individuals to call for military intervention. He asserted that such appeals have no relevance in contemporary circumstances.
Highlighting the military’s high level of professionalism and its positive relationship with civilians, the Minister affirmed, “The military is deeply professionalized, maintaining an excellent civilian-military rapport and upholding the highest standards of professionalism, with the defense of our constitution as their paramount concern.
