An eyewitness, who requested anonymity due to restrictions on discussing the incident, told PUNCH Metro that the crash was caused by the deteriorating conditions of the Asaba-Onitsha Road. The truck fell on a Peace Mass Transit bus coming from Lagos and a local shuttle bus, crushing them. “It’s truly a miracle that we avoided what could have been a devastating accident in Asaba. All 18 passengers on the Peace Mass bus survived, though they sustained minor injuries,” the witness reported.
The witness noted the deplorable state of the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway, which has been in disrepair for over four months, forcing vehicles, including trucks, to navigate through town. “The inner roads have also deteriorated, making them difficult to traverse. This morning, as the truck attempted to maneuver the poor road conditions, it ultimately tipped over and crushed the two buses. The drivers of both buses suffered injuries,” he explained.
Mr. Frederick Ogidan, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Delta State, confirmed the incident, stating, “A truck fell on the buses at Nnebisi Road, but thankfully there were no casualties. Everyone is safe.”
Upon visiting the accident scene, our correspondent observed workers transferring the truck’s load to another vehicle while police officers managed traffic due to the incident. In a related note, another truck attempting to avoid the damaged Asaba-Onitsha Expressway ran over a tricycle operator on St. Bridget’s Road. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
