Delta Police Take Down Notorious Kidnap Kingpin, Capture Alleged Gunrunner

Delta State Police Command operatives successfully eliminated the leader of a notorious kidnapping syndicate during a fierce exchange of gunfire and seized an AK-47 rifle in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

According to SP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, the suspect, identified as Joel Joseph, was confronted by a special squad dispatched to Ughelli North. In response to the operatives’ presence, Joseph initiated gunfire, resulting in a confrontation where he sustained severe gunshot wounds. He was subsequently rushed to General Hospital, Ughelli, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Authorities recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition from the deceased.

In addition to Joseph’s neutralization, law enforcement agents apprehended a suspected gunrunner and confiscated 875 rounds of live cartridges. The proactive initiatives led by CP Abaniwonda Olufemi’s special squad have resulted in the arrest of over nine suspected kidnappers and the recovery of firearms through intelligence-led policing strategies.

In a recent operation on May 16, 2024, the team targeted Joel Joseph in Inene Community, Ughelli North LGA, Delta State. Upon engaging the suspect, a gunfight ensued, culminating in Joseph’s demise and the seizure of the AK47 Rifle. Efforts to apprehend other gang members are underway based on gathered intelligence.

Furthermore, Safe Delta operatives intercepted a white Toyota Hiace Bus driven by Friday Emmanuel, a 43-year-old male suspect from Morsogar, Ethiope-West LGA, Delta State. Upon inspection, 875 rounds of Live Cartridges were discovered concealed in a sack wrapped with clothing pieces. Emmanuel was detained for further investigation, and the evidence was impounded.

CP Abaniwonda Olufemi reiterated the commitment of the command to combat crime through proactive measures, ensuring a safe and secure environment for communities. He urged the public to provide timely and credible information to enhance law enforcement efforts, emphasizing the availability of control room numbers for distress calls
