Delta SSG: EFCC Investigation Of Okowa Linked To 2027, Allegations Are BaselessThe Secretary to the Delta State Government, Kingsley Emu, has dismissed the allegations against former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as politically motivated and baseless. In an interview with Arise News on Tuesday, Emu strongly defended Okowa, describing him as a man of “impeccable character” and asserting that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has no valid case against him. He argued that the allegations, which focus on mismanagement of state resources and project expenditures, are politically driven.
“From the nature of the allegations, particularly regarding expenditure and project funding, it’s clear that this is politically motivated,” Emu stated. “To claim that funds were diverted entirely for personal gain, such as building private estates, is a false assertion. These are frivolous allegations aimed at damaging Okowa’s reputation in the run-up to the 2027 elections.”
Emu emphasized that Okowa’s track record as governor was one of public service and development, pointing out the numerous projects carried out in Delta State during his tenure. He further accused unnamed “political jobbers” of spreading misleading narratives about Okowa.
“These are faceless political jobbers, using cheap propaganda to attack Okowa. He has been to the EFCC, and they have the right to investigate, but the claims against him are without merit,” Emu said.
On the issue of contracts awarded by the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Emu defended the transparency of the process, stating that the organization is well-structured and all appropriations were done correctly. He also pointed to visible infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, in oil-producing areas as evidence of the commission’s legitimate activities.
Addressing the specific allegations of financial mismanagement, including claims that Okowa misappropriated ₦1.3 trillion in derivation funds, Emu dismissed these as “spurious.” He explained that the total funds received during Okowa’s tenure amounted to about ₦2.65 trillion, making it impossible for 50% of those funds to have been diverted.
“The EFCC has conducted inspections and verified the projects linked to these alleged funds, and the findings have been satisfactory,” Emu said. “These are physical, visible projects that anyone can see.”
Refuting reports that Okowa’s former officials have gone into hiding amid the investigation, Emu called the claims “strange” and pointed out that the EFCC had not declared anyone wanted. “If there were any real issues, the EFCC would have acted sooner. The investigation has been ongoing for over four years, and if there were any truth to these allegations, action would have been taken.”
Emu expressed confidence that Okowa would be cleared of all charges, asserting that the allegations were false and would soon be disproven. “Senator Okowa is strong and confident because he knows, as does the world, that the allegations against him are lies,” Emu said. “It’s just a matter of time before the truth comes out.”
In conclusion, Emu maintained that the campaign against Okowa is politically motivated and will eventually pass. “The truth will prevail, and this will pass,” he concluded.
