The appeal was made during a valedictory session on Tuesday in honor of the late senator. Citing historical precedents, Ndume emphasized that allowing Ubah’s widow to take his place would both honor the senator’s contributions to the Senate and ensure continuity in representing his constituency.
“What I want to appeal to you, Mr. President, is that we keep the spirit and aspirations of Ifeanyi alive,” Ndume said. He pointed out that similar transitions had occurred in the past, such as when Margery Okadigbo succeeded her late husband, Chuba Okadigbo, in the Senate. Ndume also referenced the example of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who served in the Senate, largely supported by the legacy of her husband, former Governor Bola Tinubu.
Ndume further highlighted other examples of family members continuing political legacies in the Senate, such as Senator Tokunbo Abiru, whose father was a senator in 1979, and Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, who continues the political work of the Yar’Adua family. He also mentioned Senator Iyabo Obasanjo and Senator Ede Dafinone, who followed in their fathers’ footsteps to represent their family legacies in the Senate.
He added, “His wife, fortunately, is around 50 years old and has been a tremendous support to him. I appeal to you, Mr. President, and my distinguished colleagues to support the idea of having his family represented here in this chamber. This will ensure continuity and honor for the Anambra South Senatorial District.
