The resolution emerged during Tuesday’s plenary session, prompted by a motion raised under matters of urgent public importance by Hon. Spencer Owhofa, the representative for Ughelli North 2 state constituency. Owhofa highlighted the urgency of the matter following a recent assault on residents of Uwheru community, where a farmer was brutally murdered by suspected herdsmen, resulting in injuries to several others.
The motion, seconded by Hon. Matthew Omonade of Ughelli North 1 and unanimously approved by the lawmakers, implored Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to instruct the state commissioner of police and other relevant government agencies to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute the herdsmen responsible for the invasion on Monday, February 5, 2024.
Expressing discontent with the situation, the lawmakers called for enhanced security measures in localities. They proposed a continuous 24-hour joint patrol operation involving the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, local vigilante groups, and the community security corps.
Emphasizing the potential for a breakdown of law and order if the situation persists unchecked, the legislators urged security agencies to take immediate action to halt the ongoing killing, rape, attacks, and harassment of residents in the state.
In response to the resolution, Speaker Hon Emomotimi Guwor instructed the Acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Otto Aghoghophia, to convey the resolution promptly to Governor Oborevwori for immediate implementation. The move signifies a collaborative effort between the legislative and executive branches to address the security challenges posed by the recent herdsmen attacks in Delta State.
