He emphasized that the parliament’s role extends beyond the legislative chamber and encompasses the welfare of the Nigerian people.

Speaking at the ongoing two-day retreat for the leadership of the 10th National Assembly in Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa Ibom state, Kalu stressed the responsibility of the parliament in discerning the nation’s most immediate needs and addressing them accordingly.

He advocated for a data-driven approach to legislative actions, ensuring that they are aligned with the evolving needs of the people.

Kalu highlighted the significance of participatory democracy, emphasizing public engagement in all legislative endeavors.

He called for the incorporation of the people’s needs and aspirations when shaping national budgets, rather than leaving such a critical task solely to the discretion of heads of government agencies who may not always prioritize the greater good due to a lack of data and facts.

The Deputy Speaker viewed the retreat as a foundation for gathering needs analysis results directly from the voices and experiences of the people, recognizing that unbiased, data-driven input from the constituents should serve as the primary source of raw materials for legislative work.
