Deterioration In Six States Expected To Intensify Insecurity And Economic Challenges, Warns World Bank

The World Bank has forecasted persistent insecurity, armed conflict, and worsening livelihoods in several local government areas of Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Yobe, Zamfara states, and the far north of Adamawa State in Nigeria until May 2024. The global institution also revealed that poor macroeconomic conditions are impeding access to agricultural inputs in the country, affecting cereal production. Chad, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria are expected to be the primary contributors to this decline, with the World Bank attributing the decrease to dry spells, insecurity limiting access to cropland, and poor macroeconomic conditions restricting access to agricultural inputs. The Food Security Update categorizes most areas in the sub-region as minimally food insecure from November to May 2024, but certain regions are classified as stressed or in crisis due to persistent insecurity, armed conflict, and deteriorating livelihoods.

Specifically, the affected regions in Nigeria include local government areas in Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Yobe, Zamfara states, and the far north of Adamawa state. Similar conditions are projected to impact areas in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, and Niger.

The World Bank’s latest update also highlights the challenge of high inflation in many low- and middle-income countries between August and November. In particular, the data reveals that food price inflation surpassed 5 percent in 61.9 percent of low-income countries, with the most affected regions located in Africa, North America, Latin America, South Asia, Europe, and Central Asia. Notably, food price inflation exceeded overall inflation in 74 percent of the 167 countries analyzed. In November, Nigeria experienced a headline inflation rate of 28.20 percent, with food inflation soaring to 32.84 percent.
