The Katsina State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aliyu Ma’aji, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Sunday.
Ma’aji stated that the accident involved a Hummer bus carrying 20 passengers. Sadly, nine of them died at the scene, while 11 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speed, leading to a loss of control.
The FRSC commander advised drivers to exercise caution, particularly during festive seasons, and warned against speeding, overloading, and reckless driving. He noted that despite the government’s efforts to improve road infrastructure, reckless driving remains a significant cause of fatal accidents in the state.
In a separate development, the Kano State Police Command has debunked reports of an alleged attack on an 18-seater passenger bus, describing the news as false.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, stated on Saturday that the circulating reports were untrue and urged the public to disregard them.
He added that an investigation is underway to identify the source of the fake news, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to maintaining public order and the safety of all residents. Kiyawa also warned against spreading unverified information that could incite panic and unrest.
