DG Announces Disappointing Results As 888 Candidates Fail Final Bar Examination

The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof Isa Hayatu Chiroma, revealed on Tuesday that a total of 888 candidates did not pass the final bar examination held in November 2023. Among the 5,300 candidates who participated, only 4,412 were successful, with 251 achieving a first-class grade.

During the call-to-bar ceremony in Abuja, the DG shared the positive news of the candidates’ overall performance, stating, “I am happy to report on the good performance recorded by the candidates.” He highlighted the outstanding achievement of 251 candidates securing a first-class grade, amounting to an unprecedented 83.3% success rate in the bar final examinations.

The chairman of the Body of Benchers, retired Justice Mary Peter-Odili, expressed concern about the current state of the judiciary, citing a decline in public confidence due to conflicting judgments and indiscipline among lawyers. She announced the formation of a committee to address the issue, emphasizing the importance of resolving concerns related to conflicting judgments.

“In a bid to address this vexed issue of conflicting judgments, the Body of Benchers constituted a committee made up of ranking members of the profession,” she explained. The committee’s findings, upon approval, will be forwarded to relevant bodies for implementation.

She urged new lawyers to uphold ethical standards and avoid corruption, emphasizing the significance of maintaining integrity in the legal profession.
