“The Defence Headquarters wishes to clarify that no appointment for an acting Chief of Army Staff has been made, contrary to reports from some media outlets. Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja is on his annual leave for 2024 and will resume duty afterward. The Armed Forces of Nigeria operates professionally, with all Service Chiefs fulfilling their constitutional roles,” the statement read.
The DHQ also urged individuals spreading rumors to cease immediately, assuring the public that the COAS is in good health and will return soon. Media organizations are encouraged to verify information with the appropriate authorities to avoid disseminating misinformation.
Furthermore, the DHQ dismissed any calls for a military coup against President Bola Tinubu, affirming the military’s loyalty to his administration. Gusau emphasized that such actions are treasonable under the Constitution and reiterated the military’s commitment to upholding democracy and maintaining national integrity.
“The relative peace currently enjoyed in the nation is a testament to the President’s support for the military. The Armed Forces of Nigeria, in conjunction with relevant security agencies, are prepared to act against any individuals or groups seeking unconstitutional changes,” the statement concluded.
