Divine Gift: Obiano Reveals Why Pope Francis Handed Him His Sacred Skullcap

Former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has mourned the passing of Pope Francis, describing it as a deep personal loss.

The Holy Father, Bishop of Rome, and spiritual head of the Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88. He is scheduled to be laid to rest on Saturday.

In a heartfelt tribute, Obiano recalled a memorable encounter with Pope Francis during a family visit to the Vatican on January 15, 2020.

A Knight of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great, Obiano described the occasion—his investiture into the Papal Knighthood—as profoundly enlightening.

“It was truly a revelation. One would expect a global religious leader of his stature to be aloof, but Pope Francis was warm, humble, and genuine,” Obiano remarked.

He recounted how his family stayed at Domus Sanctae Marthae, the modest residence Pope Francis chose over the opulent apostolic palace.

Obiano fondly recalled a spontaneous moment when his teenage son, Chukwudifu, took a selfie with the Pope.

“Chukwudifu, then just a teenager, eagerly snapped a selfie with him. In many formal circles, that could have been frowned upon. But Pope Francis simply smiled and embraced the moment,” he said.

“That was who he was—an authentic leader who lived by the values he preached: humility and simplicity.”

He revealed that the Pope gave each family member a gift. Rosaries were presented to his wife, Ebelechukwu, their daughter, Dr. Gechi, and young Chukwudifu.

But it was what happened next that left Obiano speechless.

“After the investiture, Pope Francis removed his white zucchetto—his papal skullcap—and handed it to me,” he said, still in awe.
