Massive Shake-Up! IGP Egbetokun Repositions Police Mobile Force Nationwide

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate restructuring of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) in a bid to boost internal security and improve its operational effectiveness.

As part of the new directives, all PMF officers currently deployed to unauthorized assignments—including personal security and guard duties—are to be withdrawn without delay.

This development was announced during a strategic meeting with PMF Squadron Commanders held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

According to a statement from Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP stressed the urgent need to realign the PMF with its foundational purpose—as the elite rapid response unit of the Nigeria Police Force, tasked with handling civil unrest, emergencies, and violent threats.

He raised concerns over the growing misuse of PMF personnel in non-essential roles such as VIP escorts, saying such practices have weakened the force’s efficiency and credibility.

To tackle this, the IGP unveiled a set of sweeping reforms. These include the withdrawal of PMF operatives from unauthorized duties, the institution of quarterly training programs centered on professionalism and ethical conduct, and the mandatory maintenance of fully armed, combat-ready units in all Squadrons for rapid deployment.

Furthermore, the IGP emphasized accountability, warning that PMF Commanders would be held responsible for the actions of their units. He encouraged commanders to lead by example, with consistent training, close supervision, and mentorship to instill discipline, uphold human rights, and ensure operational excellence.

Reiterating the police leadership’s determination to restore the PMF’s integrity and functionality, the IGP announced plans for new leadership strategies and capacity-building efforts tailored to meet today’s security demands and international standards.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support and acknowledged the valuable role of international partners in strengthening the PMF’s training and technical capabilities.

The IGP called on all Squadron Commanders to fully embrace the reforms, describing it as a professional and ethical duty. He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to protecting lives, property, and national security.
