The Enugu State Police Command, through its Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad, arrested Dr. Emmanuel Chimaobi Ugwumba, a 52-year-old resident of Ezimo-Agu in Udenu Local Government Area, on September 28, 2024. Ugwumba was taken into custody over allegations of child trafficking and forgery.
According to a statement by the police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, Ugwumba’s arrest was linked to a public notice he had issued about an abandoned child. The notice, endorsed with the name of the Enugu State Ministry of Gender and Social Development, was published in the Daily Sun Newspaper on September 27, 2024, where Ugwumba falsely identified himself as a director of OTZ, an organization connected to the Ministry.
Ndukwe revealed that after the arrest, police investigations uncovered Ugwumba’s involvement in child trafficking. Authorities rescued a pregnant woman, a four-year-old child mentioned in the public notice, and another two-year-old girl from his custody.
Further investigations showed that Ugwumba, who claimed to be a graduate of medicine and surgery from the University of Jos, runs Chima Hospital and Maternity in Ugbaike, Enugu-Ezike, located in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area. Between 2017 and 2024, Ugwumba, in collaboration with an alleged employee of the Ministry and other accomplices still at large, oversaw the antenatal care and delivery of seven unaccounted children from various mothers at his hospital.
Police also discovered that Ugwumba illegally possessed documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs and unverified pest/vector certificates issued by the Enugu State Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.
The suspect has since been arraigned in court and remains in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Custodial Centre, awaiting further legal proceedings.
