Doctors Withdraw From Kano Specialist Hospital Citing Alleged Physical Attack On Colleague By Commissioner
....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kano State has announced an indefinite withdrawal of services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, effective from 12:00 PM on November 6, 2024. The decision follows the alleged assault of a female doctor by the Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, and the government’s reported failure to address the issue.

The NMA’s statement, signed by Public Relations Officer Dr. Muhammad Aminu Musa, detailed that the incident took place on November 1, 2024, in the hospital’s Emergency Paediatric Unit. The Commissioner, accompanied by her security team, allegedly harassed and assaulted the doctor over the unavailability of a prescribed medication. An investigation by the Ministry of Health later confirmed that the doctor had acted professionally and was not at fault for the medication shortage.

Dr. Musa stated that the NMA had issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding action against the Commissioner, but the government’s inaction prompted the association’s decision to halt services at the hospital. “Our members cannot continue to work under threat or fear,” he emphasized.

The NMA’s demands include the immediate dismissal of the Commissioner from Governor Abba Yusuf’s cabinet, additional staffing, better resource allocation to reduce workload, and enhanced security throughout the hospital to protect healthcare staff and patients.

The association stressed that the service withdrawal was a necessary step to protect healthcare workers and ensure a safe working environment.
