Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Lawal stressed that the government must demonstrate its capacity to protect lives and property to discourage citizens from turning elsewhere for help.

“The government should assure us that it can provide the peace, security, and prosperity we deserve.
If it cannot, then it cannot blame any part of society for seeking help wherever it may be found,” Lawal stated.

The former SGF also backed U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that the widespread killing of Christians in Nigeria amounts to genocide.

“It’s a genocide — if it isn’t, then it’s a pogrom,” he declared.

Lawal dismissed claims that more Muslims than Christians have been killed, arguing that such comparisons do not negate the nature of the violence.

“I’ve followed the debate, and it’s obvious that those strongly rejecting the genocide label are Muslims whose brothers are the perpetrators,” he said.
“They argue that more Muslims have been killed than Christians — but that does not justify what is happening.
Even if 1,000 children are killed and one of them is yours, your pain is still real. Let’s not avoid the fact that those accused of carrying out these killings are Muslims, not Christians.”
