The Department of State Services (DSS) is currently probing the unfortunate incident that occurred at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on July 25th, 2023. The regrettable incident, which involved DSS personnel and officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), does not align with the professional conduct and ethos of the DSS. The Service neither condones nor promotes such occurrences.
The DSS holds the Judiciary in high regard as an arm and institution of government, and it does not engage in activities to undermine it. The Service acknowledges the judiciary as an integral factor in national development, nation-building, and security management. It also maintains a solid working relationship with other security and law enforcement agencies, including the NCoS. CONTINUE READING
Acknowledging the excessive zeal displayed by personnel from both agencies, the Service has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. This investigation aims to identify the roles played by specific individuals, possibly take disciplinary action if necessary, and learn lessons for future operations.
It’s crucial to underscore that the DSS has not violated any laws in handling Emefiele’s case, despite attempts by some elements to twist the narrative. The Service had previously alerted the public about sinister plots intended to tarnish its leadership.
In carrying out its duties, the DSS remains committed to maintaining professionalism, ethical standards, and a high level of discipline. The Service won’t permit its usage for fame-chasing, clout, or illusionary heroism. However, it will remain focused on its mandate for national security and call on well-meaning Nigerians to support its efforts to achieve the country’s security objectives.
Our only home is Nigeria, and we must join forces, demonstrating love and tolerance, to build it.
Peter Afunanya, Ph.D. Public Relations Officer, Department of State Services, National Headquarters, Abuja, 26th July, 2023.
