This plea emerged during a deliberation on a motion put forth by Umar Ajilo, advocating for the suspension of the tariff increase.

Ajilo, in presenting the motion, emphasized the inopportune timing of the hike amid the prevailing economic hardships faced by Nigerians.

Citing the economic challenges arising from political and financial factors, he expressed concern about the adverse impact on the average citizen, stating.

“The prevailing economic hardship resulting from political and economic factors has made life unbearable for the common man, with far-reaching effects that are yet to be addressed.”

The motion’s requests underwent an amendment proposed by Jonathan Gaza, who suggested that instead of imposing directives, the government should engage in dialogue with Multichoice.

The House, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, endorsed Gaza’s amendment through a voting process.

Speaker Abbas, supporting the idea of dialogue, acknowledged Nigeria’s status as a free-market society, emphasizing the impropriety of compelling a private company to reduce prices.

Subsequently, the House adopted the motion, referring it to the Committee on Information to oversee compliance.
