Economic Hardship: Edo Residents Ignore Explosion Threat, Siphon Fuel From Fallen Tanker on Benin-Agbor Road (Photos)

Despite warnings of a potential explosion, some residents in Edo state boldly defied the danger and began siphoning petrol from a toppled tanker along the Benin-Agbor Road.

Eyewitnesses reported that people quickly flocked to the scene and commenced siphoning the petroleum product, disregarding the police warnings.

In response, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, issued a statement confirming the incident. He emphasized that the Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, had cautioned residents to steer clear of the hazardous site.

“The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of a lone motor accident today, Wednesday, 1st May 2024, at about 15:30hrs along Benin-Agbor Road near Ukhuaihe Hills around the River, involving a Mack Truck conveying 33,000 litres of PMS labeled ‘Petrol Con Oil’,” the statement read.

“The accident occurred approximately 200 meters after Okhuaihe River as the truck driver lost control while attempting to ascend the hills, leading to a backward roll and eventual fall. Despite police warnings, bystanders converged and began siphoning the Petroleum Products.

“Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Funsho Adegboye, calls for the attention of the fire service and urges television/radio stations to sensitize citizens about the dangers of siphoning Petroleum Products.

“He further cautioned parents and guardians to instruct their children and wards to refrain from such activities to prevent potential fire outbreaks that could result in loss of life.”
