“I must address some of the comments made by my brother, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, although some have already addressed it.
“When Mr. Peter Obi was governor, he stated, ‘Any infrastructure obstructing the road must be removed, and there would be no compensation paid.’ That’s what he said,” Mr. Umahi stated.
Speaking at an event organized by the Ministry of Works to compensate property owners affected by demolitions for the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, Mr. Umahi dismissed Mr. Obi’s criticisms as provocative.
Contrary to Mr. Obi, who refused to compensate those affected by demolitions during his tenure as governor of Anambra, the Tinubu-led government is compensating affected property owners.
“Contrary to Mr. Obi’s stance, under the compassionate administration of the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are even compensating those who are unlawfully occupying the coastal line without proper documentation or infrastructure. That is mercy,” Mr. Umahi emphasized.
He continued, “Some people offer uninformed counsel. They bring judgment upon themselves. And that’s what he (Mr. Obi) has done.
“He is inciting some of the South East people who are not well informed, leading them into trouble without standing up for them. Wisdom is a defense. I urge our people to seek wisdom because I am directly involved.”
Mr. Obi had criticized Mr. Tinubu’s administration for demolishing part of Landmark Beach Resort Beach, which encroached upon the right of way due to the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.
In a series of tweets, the former Anambra governor described the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road as a “job-losing project” initiated “during a period of widespread unemployment.”
“It’s time to question the reasoning and timing of this and similar projects. The country is experiencing its worst economic crisis in history, with poverty and hunger on the rise. The basic necessities of life are out of reach for most Nigerians,” Mr. Obi remarked.
